NEBRASKA TAXPAYERS FOR FREEDOM ISSUE PAPER:
CONG. ADRIAN SMITH STOPS WELFARE LARGESSE.

BACKGROUND
. The Biden Regime, in an effort to solidify its voting base among welfare recipients, is encouraging states like NE to expand welfare grants to families. This proposal would increase our national deficit and prompt welfare individuals to lounge at home instead of seeking gainful employment.

THE PROBLEM
. The Biden Regime emergency relief plan pegs $1 billion to bribe states to enhance Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) welfare programs. The Regime encourages states to increase monthly TANF payments together with additional cash payments. Biden also wants states to suspend policies that restrict access to TANF and avoid cuts and restrictive policies like sanctions and stricter time limits.1 TANF contains nominal work requirements, but the Regime is not enforcing them. Leftist Natural Resources Comm. Chairman Raul Grijalva (AZ.) and 5 territorial delegates wrote the Office of Management and Budget to further expand access to TANF programs. The Biden effort urges states to spend TANF dollars on families not in poverty and activities which do not comply with current regulations. Biden TANF proposals allow states to do many extraneous things with our tax money. Examples include college scholarships for middle class students and crisis pregnancy centers.

THE BILL
. Conservative NE Cong. Adrian Smith introduced HR 4539, to prohibit states from using TANF grants to provide aid or services to families whose monthly incomes exceed twice the poverty line defined by the Office of Management and Budget and revised yearly according to the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1981. Under present federal law, families must actually live in poverty and have a minor child to qualify for TANF aid. However, individual states can determine other financial eligibility requirements. Rep. Smith wants to target these funds to truly needy families. HR 4539 currently is in the House Ways & Means Committee, awaiting a vote to advance it to the full House for debate.

TAKE ACTION NOW
. The Biden Regime actively curries favoritism with welfare recipients to ensure their votes and other support. NE employers are begging for employees and raising wages, while loafers lounge at home, comfortably collecting their monthly welfare checks and food stamps. Encourage the work ethic. Support Cong. Smith and NE taxpayers by lobbying Cong. Bacon and Fortenberry to support and vote for HR 4539.
