NEBRASKA TAXPAYERS FOR FREEDOM ISSUE PAPER:
SEN. SASSE BOLSTERS GOVERNMENT ACCOUNTABILITY.
BACKGROUND. The General Accounting Office (GAO) of the federal government has the duty to oversee and monitor federal departments and agencies to determine if they complete their stated missions and carry out management in a professional manner. Unfortunately, some of these entities purposely and willfully secrete materials and information from GAO inspection to avoid oversight and scrutiny.
THE SASSE BILL. S. 2849 would authorize the GAO to obtain federal agency records required to conduct audit, evaluation, and investigation duties, including utilizing civil lawsuits to force agencies to produce sought records. The GAO could access and examine information and records about agency or department powers, duties, activities, financial transactions, and other records in order to accomplish its own duties. Agency statements on actions taken or planned in response to GAO inquiries must go to both congressional committees with jurisdiction over a respective agency program or activity and the GAO. The GAO comptroller-general would obtain all materials sought. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates that this bill would have no significant effect on federal spending or the budget deficit.

OTHER GOOD BILLS SPONSORED BY SASSE:
S. 2128 would require each Office of Inspector-General to submit a list of each reporting requirement for their office, including items suggested for modification or repeal, within 60 days of request. The bill would require inspectors-gen. to create these lists now required to give to Congress. Then the Council of Inspectors-Gen. on Integrity & Efficiency would review all lists and send recommendations to Congress to eliminate, reduce, or modify reports mandated by Congress. Currently, over 70 IGs spend about $2.5 billion annually to detect and deter fraud, waste, and abuse. They produce over 7,500 audits, inspections, and evaluation reports yearly. S. 2128 will ensure that the IGs have sufficient time and resources to perform their work diligently. The CBO estimates that enacting this bill would cause no increase in direct spending causing budget deficits.
S. 748 would prohibit the Social Security Administration from issuing SSNs to illegal aliens granted deferred action by the President Obama executive order. This order allows illegals to compete with legal citizens in employment.
TAKE ACTION NOW. Contact Sen. Deb Fischer today to co-sponsor and support each of these bills in order to increase federal government efficiency and stop illegal aliens from working in this country in competition with lawful citizens.
